Dermafillers
These are biodegradable materials which are not permanent, but eventually are broken down by the body and harmlessly absorbed. Today the most common agent is hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan, which is an important component of skin and cartilage. Both aging and excessive sun exposure results in decrease production of hyaluronan by the skin. Injection of the agent may therefore be considered a restorative process to help reverse the effects of aging and sun damage on the skin.
The 2 agents used in our office are Juvederm and Restylane. Each has slightly different properties. We have found Juvederm can give a longer effect between injections, up to 6 months.
These agents are used successfully to contour, fill, and increase volume in skin-folds, wrinkles and lines.
Botox
Botox is a drug prepared form the bacterial toxin botulin. It is extremely safe to use in specific areas to treat wrinkles without surgery. Botox temporarily paralyzes specific facial muscle to allow the skin to relax and smooth. When used correctly facial expression remains, with only smoothing and softening of the wrinkles and facial lines. This effect will last 3- 4 months. Because the skin has the ability to remodel, over time some patients find injection can be done every 6 months.
Botox is used alone or with derma fillers depending on the individual.
